Character Information
Name: Arrosa Valentina "Val" Goitia
House: Trenton Corporation
Val comes from a long-dead House from which there are very few survivors. This House gains their powers from nature. Being in nature gives them limitless power, but being out of it limits their power so much that their spells can fail, or backfire, or cause other problems. Normally this is handled by a child of the House performing a ritual in order to create a nature token - a charm made out of an acorn or other nut, wrapped in twine, that they wear around their neck, giving them at least some access to the natural forces that feed their powers. But Val knows nothing of her House and their history, so she has no such token to aid her.
Unlike Almagoras, this House doesn't steal life force, but instead takes what's freely offered. Nature breathes, and this breath is what Val uses to fuel her magic.
Members of the house have a tendency to attract nature spirits due to their connection to nature, and there are usually a few following Val around, though ephemeral.

Life Details
Background: Val was born Arrosa Valentina Goitia in a village in Bizkaia, in the Basque Country, in 1980. Her father disappeared shortly before her birth, and her mother feared for their safety not knowing what had become of him. When Arrosa started speaking to things nobody else could see, her mother, Neria, tried to hide it, but neighbours who'd drop by noticed. Rumors spread that Arrosa could speak to the dead, and the neighbours started showing up to ask her to speak to their departed loved ones.
Word of this made it out of Spain, and Trenton eventually got wind of it, sending someone to investigate. By the time they found Arrosa, her mother had taken ill. They offered to bring Arrosa and her mother to America, and her mother agreed. Sadly, the trip was too much for Neria, and she took a turn for the worse, passing away shortly afterward, leaving little Arrosa in the care of the Trenton Corporation.
Adjusting was difficult. Arrosa spoke no English upon her arrival, and couldn't understand anyone who didn't speak Spanish. Nobody here spoke Basque, which was what she was most used to back home. Her mother was gone, and she didn't understand why. Trenton's setting was very different from her home in the countryside with its goats and cows and chickens. Her world was turned upsidedown almost overnight.
It was slow-going, but she did manage to adjust. She started figuring out magic - at least she tried. Her magic proved... unstable, apart from her ability to speak with spirits. This lead those at Trenton to believe she was related to House Castillo, which made finding out how her magic actually worked take much longer.
It took some years - and many accidents - before they were finally able to figure out where her powers came from. Sitting in class near a potted plant, her spells seemed to succeed more than usual. They took note, and started testing her abilities with more and more plantlife around her. They tried it with animals, as well, but that seemed less successful. When they stuck her outside, in one of the gardens, and gave her a set of spells to try out - they all worked fine! Her powers, it seemed, came from nature.
They weren't entirely sure how to go about testing this, outside of seeing how far she could push her abilities while outside compared to indoors. She was happy to oblige, and over the next few years her magic grew more stable, at least most of the time. She learned to save the larger spells for outdoors, and stick to smaller ones indoors - if only to lessen the damage she'd cause when they did go wrong, which they inevitably did.
House Politics: What are House politics
Val knows... next to nothing about House politics. She knows this House hates that House and those Houses are friends and...
None of it really makes much sense to her, and none of it really matters, since she's not from any of them. It's too much work trying to remember it all and figure out who's from which House and who they shouldn't like or such.
Personality:
Val has a high pain tolerance thanks to the many accidents she suffered during her studies. With her magic as unstable as it was, she was often burning herself, or breaking limbs when trying to use enhancing to climb walls, or other such things.
The worst accident occurred when she tried to summon a dragon, and it burned her before fading away, leaving her scarred across her right shoulder and down her back. Thanks to this, sensations are dulled on most of her right side above the waist. She has been known to favour her left side in practice, using the dullness to her advantage, since it means she can withstand more, but she needs to take care to check for injury over the dulled area after practice. (Something she doesn't always remember to do.)
When her magic kept failing and causing accidents, Val grew defiant in order to mask her fear. To some extent, her magic still frightens her, but she uses defiance to push past the fear and keep going, even pushing her magic further than she knows she should.
When it comes to people, she has no problem approaching anyone she sees and speaking to them. She can be a bit loud, however, lacking an 'inside voice', and doesn't seem to have much tact, either, saying what she thinks without considering how it'll affect others.
If something bugs her, she gets louder, yelling until whatever it is either goes away, or, in the case of objects, gets fixed - or in a fit or range, broken beyond repair.
She tends to be pretty upbeat and in high spirits, otherwise, often finding the bright side to most any situation, even a serious injury.
Val doesn't like being seen as 'girly'. As she got older, she disliked being called Arrosa, Rosa, or Rose, so she started insisting people call her Val, because it sounded less girly than a flower. She wears reds and browns, occasionally white, but never pink or purple. She doesn't tie her hair up, and apart from a pair of big gold hoop earrings that used to be her mother's, doesn't wear jewelry.
Flaws: Val has no brain-to-mouth filter. She says what she thinks, without considering the feelings of others. She may consider them after-the-fact, but in most cases, if she upsets someone, she figures they're just too sensitive.
She has a 'fiery' temper. Both literally and figuratively. She gets angry rather than upset. She screams and yells. She throws things. She throws fire. Although this is less likely, unless the offense is truly severe.
She holds a grudge. If someone treats her poorly, repeatedly, she'll find ways to humiliate them, through pranks or whatever she can think of.
Val is determined to push herself as much as she can. She studies hard, she practices hard, she plays hard - anything that's worth doing is worth giving your all! Unfortunately, she can push herself too hard, overextending her abilities and causing accidents, or overtaxing herself until she passes out.
Magic and Skill Details
Magic and Skills:
Rather than taking to a mundane skill, Val's focus is entirely magical.
Her major school is Invoking. She can summon spirits - though ever since the dragon, she hasn't tried anything larger than a big dog - but as there are often nature spirits around her, she doesn't often have need to. She tends to borrow traits from them to suit her needs, usually in ways that boost spells from her other schools, such as fire from an elemental to boost a fireball spell, or wind from an air spirit to boost her speed enhancing spells.
While she doesn't currently have any permanent companions, she is able to see or sense all spirits currently in the area, and speak to them freely. Some don't response, and she respects that, leaving them be. Others, however, are glad for the conversation, and she has been known to hold entire conversations with herself just about anywhere. People at Trenton have gotten used to it.
Her second school is Channeling, with a focus on fire magic. Unfortunately the more dangerous of the elements to master with unstable magic, and much of her earlier practice has lead to accidents - mostly hitting the wrong target, but she has been known to go without eyebrows for days or weeks when her spells go awry and singe them off, and she has quite a few faded scars on her forearms from failed spells really early on. While more stable now, it still works much better outdoors than in, and occasional miscasts still happen.
Her third and final school is Enhancing, which she uses to increase her speed, reflexes, and agility, allowing her to use her small stature to her advantage, twisting and turning, climbing walls, swinging off branches or rafters, and just generally making herself difficult to catch or target. Games of 'tag' became more interesting once she started learning this school. These spells have also been known to backfire, which resulted in many breaks and sprains early on - fewer, now, as she's become more familiar with how far she can push herself indoors, but they still occasionally happen. In a group setting, she may wind up tripping up her companions, though there's rarely serious injury involving others.
New to her skillset is mace training, along with some use of improvised weaponry, so long as it's generally mace-like. She focuses on SMASHING, and has been training with the mace-- and chair legs and baseball bats and other assorted random items-- since the first semester.
